A summer grilled cheese sandwich with sweet juicy peaches, white cheddar cheese, a drizzle of honey on buttery toasted bread.
It’s PEACH Season and I couldn’t be happier about it! There are not many fruits better than a juicy, ripe peach where the juice literally drips down your elbow. The natural sweetness of peaches can’t be beaten, especially at peak season. Since we have an abundance of peaches, I was trying to brainstorm ways to use peaches in both savory and sweet dishes. This is how the Honey Peach White Cheddar Grilled Cheese was born.
An ooey-gooey toasted grilled cheese is one of my favorite foods on this planet. I wanted to add some freshness to the sandwich by adding fresh sliced peaches. It was WAY better than I ever expected it to be and it BLEW US AWAY.
How to make this Honey Peach Grilled Cheese Sandwich?
It all starts with a sturdy piece of bread, such as Sourdough. Spread ricotta cheese (this is optional but oh so good) all over the bread. Top one side with white cheddar cheese and the other side with sliced peaches. Drizzle honey all over the peaches to add some sweetness and to make it juicy. Top with bread and spread butter on the outside of the bread.
Once the Grilled Cheese with Peaches is ready to go, it is time to toast the grilled cheese. The key is to keep the pan or panini press on a medium-low heat to allow the cheese to melt without making the bread too toasty. Butter is a necessity as it adds a buttery goodness and helps to toast the bread to a golden perfection. My favorite way to make grilled cheese sandwiches is to use a panini press. This Breville one always cooks it perfectly.
After it is cooked, get ready to eat it right away. It is best served when the cheese is hot and melted. You can even add crispy bacon for a savory addition. You can also open up the sandwich and drizzle on some balsamic glaze or top with basil ribbons.
WHAT TYPE OF CHEESE TO USE ON GRILLED CHEESE?
The most popular cheese used in grilled cheese sandwiches has to be a medium cheddar cheese. It is the perfect combination of flavor and creaminess. It also melts beautifully! A white sharp cheddar is known for its creamy texture and strong flavor. If you are looking a mild cheese that still melts well, pick up some Monterey Jack cheese. It is definitely ooey gooey.
WHAT TYPE OF BREAD TO USE FOR GRILLED CHEESE?
There are so many bread choices out there and they don’t all work for grilled cheese sandwiches. A grilled cheese needs a firm, sturdy bread to hold up to the melted cheese and butter. Sourdough bread is a crowd favorite because it is crusty with a perfect tangy flour. Ciabatta bread, an Italian white bread, is firm and sturdy and stands up to heat. If you like a thick grilled cheese sandwich, opt for the Texas Toast. If you are looking for a hearty, healthier bread option, reach for multi-grain bread.
